Introduction
Jerry is a 39 year-old respiratory therapist from Harrison, Tennessee. His hair loss pattern was a Norwood Class 5A. The goal of his procedure was to restore his frontal hairline and fill in the front, top and crown areas of his scalp.
The popular ABC television program, Extreme Makeover, visited the New Hair Institute (NHI) on February 21, 2004 to film a segment on Jerry. The episode was broadcast on March 17, 2004. The show followed Jerry's transformation which was aided by a plastic surgeon, eye surgeon, cosmetic dentist, stylist, personal trainer, and NHI's hair transplant physicians. Dr. William Rassman was enlisted to perform Jerry's hair transplant procedure. The show chronicled his journey from the initial consultation throughout the end of the procedure. Since Jerry's results will not be visible for 8-12 months, the show provided him with a hair piece for his unveiling to his friends and family.
Jerry's hair transplant procedure was a success. He had 2,657 follicular unit grafts placed in his problem areas.
Initial Consultation (February 16, 2004)
At the initial consultation Jerry met with Dr. Rassman to discuss his hair loss. Dr. Rassman determined Jerry's pattern of baldness, measured his donor hair availability, and planned for his hair transplant. Jerry voiced his initial concerns and expectations, and was satisfied by the realistic goals set by Dr. Rassman. Discussions about the procedure and what to expect eased Jerry's mind.
Procedure (February 21, 2004)
The procedure started at 9:05 A.M. and was performed by Dr. Rassman. Anesthetic was administered to Jerry's scalp, numbing the donor area. Dr. Rassman used a multi-bladed scalpel to extract the donor strip, which was then given to a team of technicians. The technicians used microscopes to dissect the strip into follicular units. Dr. Rassman used a needle to make recipient sites and the hair follicles were delicately placed into them. Throughout the procedure, Jerry was laughing, joking, and comfortable. He enjoyed an Italian lunch around noon, and was on his way home by 3:20 P.M.
