"Old Plug Correction: FUE vs Punch Excision"
By Dr. Rassman, as published in Hair Transplant Forum International, March/April 2005 issue
With the new methods of FUE using the added step that Jim Harris put in to the process, one can now excise almost every FU in a plug. The older punch excisions depended upon the size of the punch and angle to get it all out. Clearly with the old way to excise grafts, the larger the punch the better the certainty that it would come out. With the new FUE approach, there is virtually 100% certainty to individual FU removal, thereby thinning the grafts to acceptable densities. I have found this technique wonderful and it again changes the paradigm for graft excision. Now, in my practive, I take out FUE style the FUs inside the plugs for some of the cases where this approach has clearly advantages.

These studies have added to the specialty's depth and breadth of knowledge applicable to traditional mini-micrografting techniques as well as Follicular Unit Transplantation."
NHI Physician is "Good Guy" on Discovery Channel
In a recent expose on the Discovery Channel titled "Cosmetic Surgery Gone Wrong," that aired on February 12, 2001, Dr. Bernstein was featured as one of the two physicians who fixed the problems created by other doctors. He was shown repairing the previous transplants of his patient Ken Gold, who had a "corn row" look produced by the old "plug technique." Dr. Bernstein removed the old grafts, dissected them under a stereo-microscope, and then re-implanted them as individual follicular units. This was followed by Follicular Unit Transplantation using hair from his donor area. The program shows the impact on Ken's life of both his bad transplant and then the repair.
